Inception Is Exceptional

Inception

Do you believe in the wonders of dreaming, the possibility of sharing a dream with another person, the capability of designing your dream right down to the last tiny detail? The Writer and Director of Inception Christopher Nolan does.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the main protagonist Dom Cobb, a thief who specializes in stealing ideas straight from your very head by invading your dreams. The art is called extraction, and the mechanics behind this are somewhat of a science fiction element to the film, though I can already see conspiracy theorists concluding that this is no make-believe concept. Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), is Cobb's right hand man, the guy who is an expert in controlling said mechanics in the art of extraction.

Cobb has an ever-developing plot line that is keeping him from returning home to America, to his kids. Whilst on an extraction job he meets Saito (Ken Watanabe) a Japanese businessman with a rival company heir, Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), who threatens to take over the world's energy supply demands. Saito makes Cobb the irresistible offer of making it possible to return home, but only if Cobb can perform the art of Inception. Inception is the planting of ideas into another's head rather than extracting them, a task most believe to be impossible. Cobb seems to think different and takes the deal of performing Inception on Saito's rival Robert Fischer.

He proceeds to bring together a team, comprising of a forger (Tom Hardy), a man who impersonate others within dreams, A Chemist (Dileep Rao), who can concoct the perfect formula for putting people to sleep, and keeping them there. Finally, with the help of father-in-law Miles (Michael Caine), Cobb meets Ariadne (Ellen Page), the character is named after the mythological character that helped Theseus find his way out of the Minotaur's labyrinth. She is the perfect architect needed to design the landscape of the dreams in which there job will be carried out.

Mal (Marion Cotillard) is a large problem the team face within the dreams, as she tends to pop up unexpected with a desire to destroy whatever job Cobb is currently working on. She has a large connection to Cobb from his past, one that makes her stand out as a main part of the plot, even though it appears to be somewhat of a sub-plot to the main story. The development of the relationship Cobb and Mal share is possibly the only area of the film that I personally felt slowed down the pace a little, though to be honest it was nice to have a moment to catch my breath. Both DiCaprio and Cotillard definitely complimented one another in their roles.

There are other dangers that the team face whilst intruding on Fischer's dream, but that's something you should find out for yourselves.

Nolan has the stature that allows him to return with a movie made by a familiar team that he enjoys to work with, and without fail they all deliver a masterpiece. The visuals are stunningly crafted, from the appearance of a Paris street folding on top of itself to a building that has no gravity. The soundtrack has been beautifully composed by Hans Zimmer, one that never lets your mind wander from the action on screen. I actually felt myself entranced and unable to look away. Also the inclusion of the Edith Piaf classic "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" as a key plot element really adds to the film.

In a movie that gave me goose bumps at least once every 5 minutes, whether it be from the incredible visuals, the tension building soundtrack, the perfectly crafted and well delivered storyline... or maybe it was the unforgettable performances of the superbly chosen cast. No matter what it was that made me hear the word 'Wow' over and over in my head, this movie quite literally tears the world apart. I can still hear the soundtracks thriller vibe playing over and over, it was a key element to make this movies pace rarely slow down. Though it may not be the easiest of movies to interpret all the details, the majority of it is easily picked up. It also has the effect of making you guess plot developments from moment to moment, and all is eventually revealed, after letting you guess for a while. My opinion is that Inception is the movie The Matrix only dreamt it could be. It's my pick for film of the year, and quite possibly ever.
