Leah Coloff

New York, a city known for its many eccentrics and strange occurrences, is no stranger to musicians with eclectic tastes who favor unusual combinations of instruments, styles and genres. This is what makes the rich cultural texture of the city so memorable, and cellist/songwriter Leah Coloff ensures that her music, a complex web of punk rock, soul, classical and folk music and songs, is unforgettable. She is perhaps most reminiscent of Norah Jones, but accompanied by her cello, rather than a piano. However, this has a very interesting effect, as she plays it, it seems to return the favor and play her back. She bends and sways to the music with such passion that, according to her website, a reviewer remarked that “she does everything she can think of with that cello, short of setting it on fire.” This review perfectly encapsulates the fervor that characterizes Ms. Coloff’s music.

The abundant energy that Ms. Coloff brings to her performances illustrates the splendid skills she has with her cello. It is evident that she has an extensive background in classical music (another, rather mirthful review said that after getting her music degree she “told the orchestra scene to eat shit”), and she manages to combines this with her interests in soul and punk music in a most poetic way that provides for a very enjoyable listening experience. When I went to go see her in Grand Central, the group of people watching seemed to be completely enthralled, caught up in the fantastic music that emulated from Ms. Coloff’s cello, accompanied by her lovely voice. It is quite refreshing, as an appreciator of good music, to see a young female songwriter performing with such rapture that it moves you, and perhaps inspires you to do something great of your own.
